Competition in the Work Place

New Website Announcement: Office Dysfunction (officedysfunction.com) dedicated to the office politics, backstabbing coworkers, and workplace bullies that wreak havoc to working life.

In 2006, BusinessWeek magazine looked at competitive behavior in the workplace. Over 2500 (U.S.) people who are middle managers and were at least 25 years old participated in the survey. Here are some sobering statistics from that survey:

How many hours do you work?
13% works 60 hours or more a week
21% who make over $150K work more than 60 hours

What have you done for work?
91% have gone to work on a weekend
33% missed a birthday or anniversary
39% missed the start date of a vacation
35% missed an important event in their child’s life

What would you do?
22% would fire a friend to get ahead
92% would pull dog off another dog in a fight
8% would let the dogs fight if theirs was winning

My question for those of you who may see your working life described by these statistics:

Was it worth it?
If yes, what made doing all these worthwhile?
If no, why not? What have you given up or lost because of it?
