Matzo Ball Soup (keynote video clip)

Clip of my keynote speech delivered to about 300 postdocs at the 2008 NIEHS Biomedical Career Fair… this is a vignette from my short stint in pharmaceutical sales.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Did you make that lunch appointment on time?

I sure did! And would you believe… the doctor ran late; more than an hour late. By the time he arrived, that matzo ball had grown cold again. So one of his staff members popped it in the microwave. And it didn’t explode.

How long did you work as a pharmaceutical sales rep?

For about a year – I was writing my PhD thesis at the time and after defending my thesis successfully, I began looking for another industry job. Then I became a medical science liaison, and the rest is history.

The picture below was captured by one of the event photographers. I think this was one of the two interview skills sessions I delivered – don’t know why I was looking so chagrined at the moment – maybe I was pretending to be a job seeker trying to decipher a strange interview question about your favorite candy flavor and how this must correspond to your potential success as an employee.

The first time that I had matzo ball soup, I was surprised by the size too. I, too, thought it would be meatball size. (After seeing meatballs, and all the different kinds of fish balls in Asian cuisine, I thought they were all that size.)

Many changes are the results of suddenly realizing you don’t have a good answer for “what am I doing?” and “why?” This is a good example here. :-)
